Moriarty’s superb storytelling continues to shine. Only the overlong conclusion disappoints. Moriarty expertly delves into the innermost thoughts of each of the children, exposing secrets unbeknownst to each other artfully balances the present-day plot with revealing backstory and offers several different possibilities for what happened to Joy. The police and two of the Delaney children believe Stan is responsible for her disappearance as he won’t talk about it. Tension builds between Joy and Stan, and suddenly she vanishes. Apples Never Fall The sense of place is strong and even though there is a lot going on, Moriarty has written an intimate narrative of social and relationship enlightenment which got me recalling my own younger life, the missed cues and insights the older me now recognises. Eventually, the Delaney children notice oddities in Savannah’s behavior and suggest it may be time for her to leave. The couple welcome Savannah into their home, where she soon becomes a permanent guest. Introducing herself as Savannah, she claims she’s a victim of domestic abuse and has the injuries to show for it. One night, a young woman appears at the Delaneys’ door. Joy often fantasizes about their four grown children giving them grandchildren to help them out of their rut. Set in Sydney, Australia, this engrossing psychological thriller from bestseller Moriarty ( Nine Perfect Strangers) centers on Joy and Stan Delaney, who have been married for 50 years and are discontented in their retirement.

Poetry expresses meaning through the graphic placement of words on the page. Novels in verse can be especially appealing to reluctant readers because they use so much vivid imagery, and I have found that many reluctant readers are visual learners. (He also said, “You didn’t tell me it was sad!”) But what really matters is that a reluctant reader felt successful. He came back the very next morning, excited, with a huge smile on his face, surprised - and proud - that he had finished it. I told him he could probably read the book in about an hour. I opened the book and showed him the pages: words only on the left-hand pages, written in verse blank right-hand pages. I recently told a young man, an eighth grader who loves baseball, that he should try Hard Hit by Ann Warren Turner. Compared to a conventional novel, a novel in verse has perhaps half the number of words per page - and isn’t that half the battle with reluctant readers? These readers often look at a page filled with words and think, This is too much! And quit before they begin. Novels in verse have earned their place in the mainstream of children’s and young adult literature - Exhibit A: Kwame Alexander’s The Crossover winning the Newbery Medal - and this is good news for reluctant readers, especially reluctant middle-grade and middle-school readers. The Ravenels are a 7 book series, starting with Cold-Hearted Rake & ending with Devil in Disguise. Kleypas’s Wallflowers quartet is perhaps the historical series I’ve reread the most, and there were so many echoes of it here – including some of the characters making cameo appearances – and I know that residual good feelings came with me into this series. Because Kleypas is a Queen Bee of the genre, and that’s not just my opinion. If you’re a historical romance reader, and you haven’t read a Lisa Kleypas book, I’m confused about what you ARE reading, quite honestly. It’s such well-deserved hype though, guys. I zipped my way through the Ravenels, a choice made completely dependent on the fact that Fated Mates was going to be doing a show on Marrying Winterborne, and I wanted in on the hype. |
